Abstract

STRUCTURAL BONDS IN LOESSES AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON COLLAPSING Summary Described are varieties of connectors occurring in loesses between microaggregates and grains. Two main types of connectors have been stated namely the clayey and the amorphous silica and iron. Among the clayey ones the following are distinguished: clay bridges, clay buttresses and clay chains. The amorphous silica connectors are similar to bridges. During correlation between the types of connectors, forces, contacts and the structural stability expressed by imp i t was stated that: only younger loesses (LM) nonweathered of clayey types of connectors show unstable structures sensitive to water (imp > 0.02). Weathered younger loesses and older ones (LS) with silica-iron eonnectors show stable structures (imp ~ 0.02). Role of cementing connectors in the Polish loesses is insignificant. At the end of the paper the definition of skeletal microstructure is precised.
