Abstract

TERMINOLOGY, ORIGIN AND DISTRIBUTION OFF LINTS

Summary
From the point of view of petrography, studies of nodular sileceus rocks are difficult and often troublesome. This is connected with the necessity of using special laboratory techniques and studies of siliceus nodule together with the surrounding sediments. Their origin and rules of distribution in sediments are often not known and their genetic classification is not existing. Along with growing data on nodular cherts various views and suggestions, often contradictory, were put forward on the basis of results of laboratory studies and field works and theoretical analyses. This is the reason why the concept of "flint" is susceptible of various interpretations and used quite freely. The best example is here nodular form of nodular cherts usually treated as a synonym of concretion which groundlessly and, at the same time, definitely forejudges the question of origin. Such approach became firmly questioned in the recent studies and publications as such nodular forms may markedly differ in origin.
The paper presents an attempt to summarize all the available data on nodular cherts and to put straight those questions which require some agreement and unification only. These are the questions of position of nodular cherts in the group of siliceous sedimentary rocks , their typomorphic and genetic classification, definitions and terminology, as well as appearance, occurrence and distribution in carbonate cyclothems. The last question is discussed at the background of the dynamics of development of sedimentary basins and dependence on the type of sediments originating in the Mesozoic marginal zone of the Holy Cross Mts.
