Abstract

ORIGIN OF THE MIDDLE MIOCENE BADENIAN SALTS IN THE CARPATHIAN REGION Summary New data on the chemical composition of inclusion brines in the Wieliczka Salt Mine (Carpathian Foredeep) and the Zbudza Formation (East Slovakian Basin) (Fig. 2) as well as the earlier published results of study in other parts of the Carpathian region (Tab. 1) indicate that brines in the Badenian salt basins were ofNa-K-Mg-Cl-S04 type and considering the ion ratios they were close to modern marine water. Bromine content data (Tab. 2) and isotopic study (Tab. 3) indicate that the marine water was the main source of ions. The brine concentration as well as the main ion ratios did not fluctuate considerably during the halite precipitation. There was a considerable good exchange of brines between particular basins as well as with the ocean. The temperature of brines did not exceed 40°C and the depth of basins during chevron halite precipitation did not exceed a few tens of meters.
