Abstract

SEDIMENTARY BASINS AND PETROLEUM PROVINCES IN POLAND: AN OVERVIEW Summary At present, forecasting of hydro carbon- bearing zones is elaborated by methodology named basin analysis. Principles of this procedure are to integrate multidisciplinary geological and geophysical data into the petroleum play concept. The results of drilling and play procedures allow to predict boundaries of petroleum provinces. Hitherto, in Poland was used the scheme where the Carpathians, Carpathian Foredeep and Polish Lowland are distinguished as hydrocarbon prospective zones (Fig. 1). Good geological diagnosis of Poland enables to discriminate between petroleum provinces in terms of basin analysis methodology. In the case of Polish Basin the author used mainly own works and in the other geological units the published data were only completed. Results of this analysis with regards to the stratigraphy of hydrocarbon-bearing areas are presented in Figs 2-10. Ali these prospective areas (Fig. 11) match into five independent units (Fig. 12) which could be define as petroleum provinces: Pomerania, Wielkopolska, Małopolska, Lublin and Gdańsk. These petroleum provinces are only the parts of sedimentary basins which individual development enabled generation, migration and preservation of hydrocarbons.
