Abstract

OXYGEN ISOTOPE DETERMINATIONS IN QUARTZ GROUP MINERAIS

Summary
The paper presents preliminary results of oxygen isotope determinations done on selected quartz crystals and siliceous rocks (cherts and flints) primarily from the Holy Cross Mountain region (Tab. 1). The extraction method was based on BrF5 reagent (Clayton & Mayeda, 1963). Oxygen based temperatures in quartz crystals were similar to those derived from homogenization of gaseous-liquid inclusions. Ordovician chalcedonites, and Jurassic and Cretaceous cherts and flints revealed temperatures in the range of 50-70°C. The Cretaceous cherts yielded distinctly higher temperatures than the surrounding marls. The investigation is ongoing and should cast a new light on the origin of these enigmatic rocks.
