Abstract
EXPLOITATION OF THE NATURAL AGGREGATE RESOURCES IN SOBOLEWO NEAR SUWAŁKI AND ITS ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Summary
The paper evaluates the location of a natural aggregate mine in Sobolewo near Suwałki, taking into account the local environmental conditions, by assessing the environmental impact of 27 years of the mine operation. Events prior the exploitation began are reminded, as an evidence of public protest against locating environmentally hazardous enterprises in areas of high natural values. The paper presents a brief piece of history of environmental research in the academic and educational units of the Faculty of Geology, Warsaw University, and also indicates environmental hazards resulting from human activity.
