Summary
Brief history of Chilean mining industry and an important silver mine of mid-19th century, Chańarcillo, is described. Excerpts from books and letters by I. Domeyko document the mining and geological activities of those pioneering years. At the same time they provide insight into his outstanding personality, intentions, broad scope of interests and activities, as well as didactic and literary talents. An idea of turning the abandoned Chańarcillo mine into a geosite of general interest and training area for students of geology and mining is developed in cooperating universities of Chile and Poland, which cultivate Domeyko’s traditions.
