GEOPHYSICAL CLASSIFICATIONS OF ROCK MASS PROPERTIES
Summary
First, a review of geotechnical classifications based on geophysical parameters for rock mass recognition has been presented. The basic interrelations of these classifications as well as graphs for determination of rock mass parameters have been described in some detail. Then, an example of rock mass quality and modulus of elasticity and deformation calculations for project of road tunnel in Węgierska Górka has been presented. Demonstrated are the consistence and great reliability of Barton (1996) method for the case of minimal values and Bestyński (1997) method used to determine deformation modulus. There is a need for further development of geophysical methods for rock mass properties recognition, especially seismic, using such parameters as S-wave velocity and attenuation.
