Abstract
Upper Cretaceous rooks between Brzeg and Opole in the light of a micropalaentological research
Abstract
The Cretaceous rocks, as recognized in the borehole profiles located between the vicinities of Brzeg and Opole, are represented by variously grained, thickly bedded sandstones, marls and sandy marls. They unconformably overlie some older rocks, and are covered by the Tertiary and Quaternary sediments of variable thickness. The Cretaceous marls have been found to contain some fairly rich assemblages of microfauna, in which of particular stratigraphical significance are foraminiferal tests. Based on these latter forms, the investigated rock series has been divided by the present authors into the Upper Cenomanian, Turonian, and Coniacian. The foraminiferal assemblages appear to be dominated by planktonic species, which are accompanied by minor amounts of the forms with aglutinated tests. Qualitative analysis of the microfaunas, together with some general lithological observations, all point to an analogy to the Turonian-Coniacian of the nearby vicinity of Głubczyce, as well as to the Upper Turonian-Lower Coniacian of the Intra-Sudetic Basin, Central Sudetes.
