Abstract
Lithological-petrographical variability and depositional settings of the youngest Tertiary sediments in Middle-Odra Trough
Abstract
This paper presents the results of a recent petrographic study of the so-called Poznań Beds and Gozdnica Beds (uppermost Tertiary) in the Middle-Odra Trough, southwestern Poland. The petrographic data are reviewed here in a close connection with the general geology of these two (informal) lithostratigraphic units. As a whole, the petrographic and geological evidence have been used to interpret the sedimentary environment of these two rock series. It has been inferred that the lower Poznań Beds were deposited in a fluvial environment, while the upper Poznań Beds did probably originate in a lacustrine/shallow-marine environment. The Gozdnica Beds, in turn, are thought to have originated through alluvial-fan deposition at the outer (northeastern) edge of the Sudetes; marginal portion of this latter alluvial wedge has been recognized as present in the vicinity of Głogów.
