Abstract

STONE IN THE ARCHITECTURE OF LUBLIN OVER THE CENTURIES

Abstract. The paper presents the results of field mapping of rocks used in the architecture of Lublin over the centuries. The lithology and distribution of rocks is presented on the maps, diagrams and in the table for over 200 buildings and architectural objects. They are located mainly at the Castel and Old Town Hills and also in the area of old districts (as Kirkut, Czwartek, ¯migród) the Downtown. Each of described historical periods is characterized by specific orientation of used material in architecture. In the characteristic of used rocks is observed a clear division into five chronological stages: 1) from the Middle Ages to the beginning of partition of Poland, 2) partition time, 3) the interwar period, 4) communist epoch and also 5) modern times. There are a lot of buildings (castle, churches and tenement houses) made of common, local rocks – the best was the opokas (Upper Mastrichtian, Cretaceous) explored in the surrounding area of Lublin. The exotics imported from the other regions of southern Poland were used to ornaments during the prosperous periods (e.g. Sudetic granites and Triassic sandstones from Holy Cross Mountains). There are also a lot of domestic erratic Scandinavian rocks (Odranian and older glaciations) used as cheap and proof material for road construction.
