REMARKS ON GROUNDWATER MONITORING FOR COMMUNAL LANDFILLS

Abstract. Performed on the base of current legal regulations groundwater quality monitoring for numerous communal landfills in Poland is controversial and its reliability is questionable. Critical comments on the guidelines regulating landfills monitoring and they implementation in Poland have been presented in this paper. Questionable are obligatory measurements of the precipitation (daily for 30 years after landfill
closure) and systematic obligatory investigations of the sum of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Very important problems related to gaining of the representative and reliable data from landfills monitoring have been also presented. Particular attention has been paid to problems of spatial and time representativeness of samples related to piezometers location, number and construction, and also to applied
methodology, range of investigations and finally to data interpretation. The principal reasons of the establishment of nonrepresentative monitoring networks are: poor knowledge about site hydrogeology, lack of precise data about vertical gradients, improper construction of piezometers and not taking contaminant heterogeneity into consideration. The reasons of problematic reliability and representativeness of monitoring data are also: numerous mistakes made at all stages of monitoring program, frequent lack of essential inspection (supervision) of investigations, and lack of final report control.
