Abstract

CARBONATED WATERS OF ŁOMNICA AND WIERCHOMLA IN THE POLISH CARPATHIANS

Abstract. Among many sites in the Polish Carpathians, carbonated waters occur also in Łomnica and Wierchomla. The waters flow out mainly from fracture and fracture-slope springs and have been rendered accessible by drillings as well. £omnica and Wierchomla are situated in the Krynica facies zone of the Magura Unit, and the waters are associated with the Cretaceous–Paleogene flysch strata that make up the Wierchomla-Łomnica anticline. The carbonated waters with the TDS values from1.1 to 3.6 g/dm3 represent the HCO3–Ca–Mg or HCO3–Ca and only occasionally HCO3–Ca–Na hydrogeochemical types. The Ca2+ content ranges from 123 to 552 mg/dm3 and that of Mg2+ from 12 to 147 mg/dm3. In all these waters CO2 is the specific component, in most of them being accompanied by Fe2+. The therapeutic carbonated waters of Łomnica and the waters of Wierchomla, whose therapeutic properties are still under investigations, are currently utilized in crenotherapy by locals and tourists but only from springs. The two localities are the spas of the future, since beside the proved reserves of valuable waters they are situated in the areas of undisputed landscape and touristic values with the remainders of still wild Carpathian nature.
