Abstract

THE AREA UNDER THREAT OF GROUND SURFACE INUNDATION AND FLOODING CAUSED BY GROUNDWATER – THE PRESENT STATE OF RECOGNITION AND ACTION PLAN NEEDED IN THE LIGHT OF EU FLOOD DIRECTIVE

Abstract. Extreme rainfalls which occurred in recent years in Poland showed that a large area of the country is subject to the risk from ground surface inundation and flooding caused by groundwater. The only regional study of the problem so far, the “Map of the area threatened with ground surface inundation in Poland”, at a scale of 1:50 000, was highly useful during the removal of damage caused by flooding. The GIS map was prepared by the Polish Hydrogeological Survey in the Polish Geological Institute in 2003–2006. According to the EU Flood
Directive (2007/60/EC) implementation, it is essential to prepare a more detailed study at a scale of 1:10 000 for the purpose of flood hazard maps and flood risk maps where flooding caused by groundwater could appear. The results of this work would be implemented in the flood risk management plans and land development plans.
