Abstract


Lithofacies and sedimentation of Diplopora Dolomites (Middle Muschelkalk) in the east part of the Cracovian-Silesian region

The prevailing part of the examined dolomites originated in a shallow-water sublittoral lagoon-like environment. The formation in question is of textural variety and consists of grains of mainly inorganic origin: peloids, intraclasts, ooids and oncoids. Skeletal fragments are few and of low diversity. Among these only green algae and crinoids are of rock-forming importance. Locally, sedimentation of the Diplopora Dolomite took place in littoral, temporarily emerging, shoals, which is indicated by the presence of stromatolites and laminites. They contain early diagenetic sedimentary structures formed in subaerial conditions such as birdseyes, tepee structures, and mud cracks. The sequence in question displays distinct triplicity. The lower and upper complexes of the sequence have been created mainly in a low energy environment, whereas the middle complex characterizes an environment of moderate or strong turbulence. Moreover, the sequence of sediments indicates that the regional shallowing took place twice in the basin considered.
