Abstract

System of joint in the Mesozoic rocks of the southern margin of the Holy Cross Mts. between Ostrów and Strasznów

In the Mesozoic rocks of the southern margin of the Holy Cross Mts. (fig. 1 ), two systems of joints, i. e. orthogonal and diagonal, have been noted. The orthogonal system is very well developed throughout the area in question, whereas the diagonal system-only in some regions (fig. 2 ). Within the orthogonal system, two sets of joints: longitudinal and transversal, genetically and geometrically interrelated, may be distinguished. The longitudinal set of joints (100—135°) is parallel to the strike of beds, the transversal one is normal to the strike of beds and to the course of the principal tectonic structures. The transversal joints are better developed than the longitudinal ones. The diagonal joints never appear separately but they accompany the orthogonal joints (fig. 2 ). Their directions are not constant, depending on the local tectonic structure. Both the orthogonal and diagonal systems of joints are of a tectonic character. According to N. J. Price (1959), the orthogonal joints should be treated as extensive. The pattern of the orthogonal system does not change throughout the margin of the Holy Cross Mts. and neither does the form of sets of joints of this system. This points to a common genesis of both sets of joints in the whole area, as already suggested by W. Jaroszewski (1972).
