Abstract


Localities of Quaternary floras in the Holy Cross Mts

Palaeobotanical investigations of the Quaternary sediments containing fossil plant remains were started in the region of the Holy Cross Mts by A. Kozłowska in 1923. From then on results of palaeobotanical investigations carried out in 24 localities were published (fig. 1). The exact age could be determined only in profiles containing sediments representing the optimum periods of development of vegetation. In the other cases a proper determination of age was not possible. Sediments of Masovian Interglacial were investigated in four localities distributed on the Pilica river. Pollen diagrams from three localities (Barkowice Mokre, Olszewice, and Sewerynów) comprise optimum periods of development of vegetation. In the locality at Witaszyn a post-optimum period was recorded only, and therefore the dating was based on geological data. Localities containing plant remains of this Eemian Interglacial are distributed near to the central parts of the Holy Cross Mts and are not covered with morainic sediments. Fully representative here are pollen profiles from Bedlno and Sławno. On the basis of few samples the Eemian Interglacial sediments were identified also at Styków and Niekłań. Holocene represented above all by peatbogs was investigated by pollen analysis method in many localities. It was found that only in a few cases the Late-Glacial sediments are present. Glacial floras occur in the same localities where interglacial floras were stated. Fossil soils, often occurring in the loess cover, proved as yet to be barren.
