Abstract

Muschelkalk in the subsurface geology of the Polish Carpathian Foreland

The Lower Muschelkalk of the Carpathian Foreland, found in 15 boreholes between Mielec and Busko, displays two facial types of development: the Holy Cross Mts. type and the Cracow-Silesian type. The epigenetic dolomitisation of the Muschelkalk, which characterizes certain occurrence areas of the latter facies, is also observable here. ·The Muschelkalk was subjected to several movements, from the Labininn to the middle-Cimmerian; it was also degraded prior to the Keuper and the MaIm transgressions. Both the sub-Keuper and. the sub-MaIm surfaces were, in turn, deformed and dislocated during Laramide movements. A study of the Lower Muschelkalk facies in relation to its geological structure may prove useful in oil prospecting. The Labinian and middle-Cimmerian tectonics in this area may affect the migration of hydrocarbons.
