Abstract

Stratigraphy of the salinary Röt of the fore-sudetic monocline

Variegated pelites of the Lower Röt have been found in boreholes within an area stretching between Opole and Gorzów Wielkopolski. They contain Myophoria costata which migrated here via the Moravian Gate at the time of the Thetys ingression. Evaporite sediments of the middle and upper Röt were deposited in the dry climatic zone where the main Polish (Poznań) sedimentary basin was situated. These are the "white" anhydrite series with a salt intercalation, the lower "carbonate" series, the anhydrite "upper evaporite maximum" and the "upper carbonate" series. The isopachytes indicate a nearly W-E direction of the central part of the basin, with salt in the "white" series. The fore-sudetic monocline was formed as a result of Laramide movements. It has a NE inclination and its beds strike in a direction differing from that in their original sedimentary basin. This may provide a basis for the extrapolation of conclusions concerning the palaeogeographic problems of the Röt onto other Laramide structural zones.
