Abstract

Origin and age of the western Tatra caverns

Hydrogeological observations, as well as features studied in cave system, indicate that all Tatra caves have developed as separate, single-branchwork systems mainly under tube-full conditions. This reasonably justifies the writer's rejection of previous opinions of the phreatic origin of the Tatra caverns. Conditions accompanying the initiation of underground systems are here discussed. It Is assumed that the oldest Tatra caves formed In the Upper Pliocene. New caves has developed during the Pleistocene and the older ones were strongly modified.
