Abstract

UPPER CRETACEOUS SEDlMENTS OF THE NORTH CAUCASUS AND SUBCAUCASIAUpper Cretaceous deposits observable in outcrops on the northern slopes of the Caucasus, or pierced by boreholes in Subcaucasia are described. Evidence is reported which is used in a detailed biostratigraphic division of Upper Cretaceous strata within that area. Seven facial types are differentiated. They are based on the presence or absence of stratigraphic gaps, thickness variability occurrence of submarine slumping, facial variability of sediments, and other features. An analysis is made of the paleogeographic and tectonic conditions that prevailed during Upper Cretaceous time in North Caucasus and Subcaucasia
