THE DIFFERENTIATION OF THE ROTHLIEGENDE FROM THE “WEISSLIEGENDE” BY PETROGRAPHlC STUDIES

The Rothliegende and the overlying "Weissliegende"¹, although geologically distinguishable, display analogous lithological features. The glauconite content, recently recognized as an index character, does not, according to the writer, disclose any essential differences. Only in the heavy mineral assemblages of the “Weissliegendes" did the tourmaline content increase with an accompanying decrease in the non-translucent mineral content. This may be due to the re-grouping attending the redeposition of minerals and may represent an index feature of the deposits here mentioned.
