Abstract

STRATIGRAPHY, SEDIMENTATION AND PALEOGEOGRAPHY OF THE ZECHSTEIN IN POMERANIA

On the basis Of borehole and geophysical materials and on the publications so far available a lithostratigraphic division has been made of the Zechstein deposits in Pomerania together with an analysis of their sedimentation and a reconstruction of the palaeogeographic conditions. The three regions thus distinguished differ in the development, of the Zechstein deposits, the geology of the substratum and the further structural development. They are a fragment of the East European Platform the marginal zone of this Platform and a fragment of the Middle European Basin. The sedimentary process in the particular lithostratigraphic horizons has been described and their regional differentiation has been stressed. A new interpretation is suggested of the origin of the "recessive evaporates” of the boundary of the Leine and Aller cycles and the formation of carbonate rocks among anhydrites. Changes in the shoreline and in the depth of the basin occurring in the successive cycles are reported. The usefulness of conodonts and the polychaete jaw apparatuses for stratigraphic correlations of the Permian is discussed.
