Abstract

POSSIBILITIES OF DAY MINERALS OCCURRENCE ON THE MARS

Summary
Author presented here a review of literature on models of mineral composition of Marsian regolithe especially regarding occurrence of clay minerals in its fine fraction. Separate models based on: chemical composition, reflected light spectra of visible and. infrared intervals, atmosphere composition, surface planet conditions, mineral thermodynamics and others, are so divergent in problem of clay mineral content, particularly of smectite. Author proposed a simple experiment on Mars surface to explain smectite importance within ground and dust of Marsian atmosphere. Such experiment consists of measurement of specific surface of regolithe fine fraction. Due to highly developed surface of smectite mineral fabric (up to 1000 m2g-1) results of this experiment could verify current models of mineral composition of Marsian ground. Offered method of measuring specific surface of fine fraction from Marsian ground based on gravimetric measurements of ethylene glycol or glycerine sorption on particles and grains of mineral fabric.
